Limits on the Mass of the Central Black Hole in Sixteen Nearby Bulges1
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report upper limits on the masses of black holes that can be present in the centers of sixteen nearby galaxy bulges. These limits Mlim BH for our statistically complete sample were derived from the modeling of the central emission-line widths ([N II] or [S II]), observed over a 0.′′25× 0.2 (R <∼ 9 pc) aperture. The experiment has a mean detection sensitivity of ∼ 3.9×106 M⊙. For three sample members with direct determinations of MBH our upper limits agree within the uncertainties, while in general our upper limits are found to be close to the masses measured in other bulges with global properties similar to ours. Remarkably, our limits lie quite closely to the recently derived MBH −σ⋆ relation. These results support a picture wherein the black-hole mass and overall galaxy structure are closely linked, as galaxies with exceptionally high MBH at a given σ⋆ apparently are rare. متن کاملBlack Hole Demography from Nearby Active Galactic Nuclei
A significant fraction of local galaxies show evidence of nuclear activity. I argue that the bulk of this activity, while energetically not remarkable, derives from accretion onto a central massive black hole. The statistics of nearby active galactic nuclei thus provide an effective probe of black hole demography. Consistent with the picture emerging from direct dynamical studies, the local cen...
متن کاملUsing Pulsars to Detect Massive Black Hole Binaries via Gravitational Radiation: Sagittarius a and Nearby Galaxies
Pulsar timing measurements can be used to detect gravitational radiation from massive black hole binaries. The ∼106d quasi-periodic flux variations in Sagittarius A (Sgr A) at radio wavelengths reported by Zhao, Bower, & Goss (2001) may be due to binarity of the massive black hole that is presumed to be responsible for the radio emission. A 106d equal-mass binary black hole is unlikely based on...
متن کاملOrganizational Black Hole Theory
There are issues in organizations that require new theoretical formulation. Hence, metaphorical theorizing is used in the study of organizations to interpret them and understand their complexities. In this method, the organization is likened to an entity and one of the key features of that entity is generalized to the organization. It should be borne in mind that most organizational theories ar...
متن کاملFeast and Famine: Regulation of Black Hole Growth in Low Redshift Galaxies
We analyze the observed distribution of Eddington ratios (L/LEdd) as a function of supermassive black hole mass for a large sample of nearby galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We demonstrate that there are two distinct regimes of black hole growth in nearby galaxies. The first is associated with galaxies with significant star formation (M∗/SFR ∼ a Hubble time) in their central ki...
